Scholarly Authors Want More Visibility

A recently published survey by Taylor & Francis of scholarly authors reveals a growing acceptance of the benefits of open access publication. Given that some publishers can charge article processing fees as high as $4000, however, authors are increasingly expecting more for their money.

Topping the list of services expected by authors are: rigorous and quick peer-review, and promotion of their articles, post-publication.

These expectations of publishers from authors should not come as a surprise. It is estimated that there are now over 5000 new peer-reviewed articles published across 27,000 online journals, daily. Publishing your article open for anyone to see is a great first step, but with so much content floating around, having your content seen just on that one journal is not sufficient to generate impact.

The industry of scholarly publishing was initially created to keep (i.e index), curate (i.e. peer-review), and distribute the leading edge of humanities knowledge through peer-reviewed content. While scholarly publishers are still certainly doing a great job indexing content, the peer-review system is starting to show it’s age, and electronic distribution of content is almost non-existent. Traditionally, publishers distributed content via circulation of their print journals. But as scholarly publisher continue to move from print to online - what are publishers doing today to ensure electronic distribution of our work?

Our aim at TrendMD is to help publishers utilize the amazing distribution power of the internet, to electronically disseminate their authors work. Similar to print circulations, TrendMD guarantees a certain amount of distribution, by intelligently recommending article links next to other relevant articles, across online journals and blogs. We’re happy to announce that BMJ Group is now part of our growing network of publishers. This means that content submitted to TrendMD will be distributed to a targeted audience of >2M people per month, and growing at 5% per week.

If you’re a scholarly publisher reading this blog post, I encourage you to join our network today, and help your authors generate the impact they deserve. Besides attracting more authors to your journals, you’ll also increase your revenue and readership.
